This series consists of general correspondence of the Division of Labor with other federal and state agencies. Represented are the U.S. Civil Service Commission; the U.S. Dept. of Interior, Bituminous Coal Division; the U.S. War Dept.; the U.S. Works Projects Administration; the Workmen's Compensation Unit of the Ala. Dept. of Labor and the various divisions of the U.S. Dept. of Labor - U.S. Conciliation Service, Children's Bureau, Division of Labor Standards, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Office of the Secretary, Wage and Hour Division and Womens Bureau. The files contain letters as well as press releases and reports from the various agencies. A large portion of the correspondence is with the U.S. Dept. of Labor, U.S. Conciliation Service and the Wage and Hour Division. Included are reports from J.R. Steelman, Director of Conciliation, concerning labor disputes in Ala. in which the U.S. Dept. of Conciliation had assisted in negotiations. The files also inform the Ala. Division of Labor of any controversies in the State which had been reported to the U.S. Conciliation Service. Correspondence with the Wage and Hour Division includes referrals to that federal dept. of any possible violations of the law which had been reported to Ala. Dept. of Industrial Relations. Similar correspondence may be found in the Ala. Dept. of Labor files (1935-1939) and the Ala. Dept. of Labor files (1943- ).
